The little man arrives home

Benjamin and I arrived home one day early, and I was excited to be back in my own space.  Adrian's parents were here and we were thankful to have some extra help while adjusting to our new routine.  Lina, Adrian's Mom, is a fantastic cook and I enjoyed having many of her delicious meals.  Yummy!
My parents came for a visit, too!  It's been awhile since a baby has been on my side of the family so they were thrilled to spend some quality time with Benjamin.

Benjamin makes his debut!

October 20th, 2010 Benjamin Ryan Bashford arrives at 1:43A.M,  2 days early.  What a cutie, but I am totally exhausted.  On Wednesday October 19th,  Adrian and I arrived at the hospital at 5:00pm after my water had broke at home.  Luckily, we were admitted right away because I was in so much pain and couldn't imagine returning home to wait until I was further dilated.  My contractions were 1-2 minutes apart and, at times, without breaks in between.  Very painful!
Not long after arriving in our delivery room, I asked for an epidural but had to wait until the anesthesiologist was finished with an emergency c-section.  This is where time felt like it was standing still and my labour and delivery plan went out the window.   The conversation between the nurse and I went a little like this, the nurse asked " Would you like some Nubain (a narcotic) to help ease the pain while you're waiting for the epidural".  "Absolutely",  I respond. The nurse continues, "The side effects are......." but I interject, " I'm okay with that.  How fast can I get it?"  After the nubain was administered, it helped a little with labour pains but they were still unbearable.   While continuing to wait, I read a sign on the wall saying, "We do not tolerate verbal or physical abuse"  and it made me laugh because I totally understand why the sign would need to be posted.
Finally the anesthetist arrived, gave me the epidural, and life was so much better until complications occurred, the baby's heart rate dropped significantly, twice.   After the second time, I was being wheeled off to the operating room for an emergency cesarean section.  Although this part was scary, within minutes Benjamin was born and it was all worth it.  He weighed 7 lbs 6 ounces.  It turned out that the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck, which was the cause of his dropping heart-rate.
Benjamin is happy, healthy, and thriving at home.  Now onto the next obstacle, lack-o-sleep!

Thanks for all the visits and warm wishes!
